CHAPTER 28

Sunday, December 1st, 2086 — 10:00pm — Manassas Battlefield Campground

“You look tired, Captain,” Alarcon said. “I think the best way to bring you up to date on everything that’s happened over the past fifty years is to plug you into the Resistance TEV network.”

Tyler decided to trust Alarcon. If the man wanted to betray him, there was no reason to hide him at the campground.

“How do we do that?” Tyler said. “Won’t that bring those Brownshirts back here?” He swung his hands to indicate the campground. “Are they smart enough to monitor communications? Or do they even care?”

“Brownshirts, eh?” Alarcon chuckled. “That’s an excellent name for our friends over there.” He pointed toward the armed camp. “Yes, it would, but we’ll be mobile. We should leave. They might extract information from Major McKnight and come back looking for you.”

“Not in a million years,” Tyler said. “But it makes sense to get out of here. What do you have in mind?”

Alarcon considered this. “Well, we need an hour to download the TEV files. There’s a perfect place to hide for a while in Reston, so we’ll head north from here for an hour while downloading the Resistance files, then we’ll double back to Reston.”

Tyler trusted the man, but was uncomfortable with being in the dark about everything.

“What kind of place is it? The place in Reston, I mean?”

“Oh, it’s friendly. And I’ve already received an invitation to take you there.”

“Pardon me if I sound skeptical, and I do appreciate all you’ve done for me, but who would invite me to their place knowing nothing about me?”

“Captain, I can’t tell you much yet, just in case we don’t make it there. The less you know, the better.”

“I see—”

“—But this one thing I can promise you. With these folks, your reputation proceeds you. I don’t know how to set you at ease, but you are safe with me and with them.”

What choice do I have? I can wait a little longer.

“Okay,” he said. “What do we do next?”

Alarcon stepped over to the RV and pounded on the side of it. “Ricky,” he called. “We’re leaving. Secure the cabin.”

“Yes, sir, Dad,” the boy said from inside the RV.

Alarcon nodded to Tyler and began disconnecting the RV from the campground’s power and sanitation.

“What can I do?” Tyler asked.

“You can put out our campfire and collect the chairs and gear.”

Tyler walked around the campsite, picking up gear and stowing it in the RV’s undercarriage storage.

Within thirty minutes, the ancient camper turned out of the National Battlefield and headed north on U.S. 29, the Lee Highway.

Alarcon drove, with his son in the passenger seat and Tyler in a seat behind Ricky. Once they were underway, Alarcon asked Ricky to download the Resistance files. Tyler watched as the boy deftly operated the RV’s internet access console.

“We’re connected, Dad,” he said.

“Roger. And what happens next?”

“We download the TEV updates and end the connection.”

“Sorry,” Alarcon said. “What was that last part?”

The boy laughed. “We end the connection.”

“And why do we do that?”

“So they cannot trace us, sir.
